MY BACKYARD
"Trailer" version
In 2007 I won a scholarship from the FTO to make a documentary. I looked at the year 1837 (when my family came out from Scotland), 1967 (when I was born and Aborigines were given the right to vote), and 2007 when the word "sorry" was heard a lot in the press. The connections were dizzying. Download the full transcript here if you're interested.
BUTTERFISH
Trailer for a Nick Hornby novel
This was shortlisted in a Random House Press competition. Just took a bunch of footage on the way home from a Reels rehearsal. Nabbed my female lead on the bus, the guy lived across the road. The track is called "The Mangroves".
THE ISLAND FOUNDATION
Short film about Indonesian Jong boats
The Island Foundation was set up by Nikoi Island as a way to support local industry and culture around the area. Jong boat races were once the sport of kings, and the Foundation is trying to help keep this craft and culture alive. Click here to learn more.
BAWAH ISLAND
Film for Investors
A friend of mine bought an island recently and I travelled overnight on a boat from Batan with a bunch of architects to check it out.
They are looking at ways to develop in a sustainable fashion. Here's a link to their website if you're interested.
MOUNTAIN DEVIL
Study for "My Backyard"
I travelled with two archeologists to a site North of Sydney. These carvings are part of a matrix spread over hundreds of square kilometres, maybe more. Certain elements of a carving will always point to a specific site many kilometres away. This particular carving has a nasty story.
THE RETURN
Mobile phone film
This was my first film, shot on an old mobile. It's about Rachmaninov. and how he had to leave Russia and stop composing for a while to support his family. It was screened at Newtown Film Festival and the pixels were as big as horses. I wrote and played the music on my laptop.
2012
Study for a film
A friend was writing a feature, now in production. This was a very early study using found slides, music and some handicam footage. A short film like this, put together in a couple of hours, can be a nice way to feel out your project and get things rolling.
TOY DRUMS
Multitracked music video
Just a bit of fun with toy instruments and a couple of busted up old keyboards.
BUTTERFINGERS
"A little girl remembers when she got old"
My first screenplay was funded by the AFC through Metroscreen's Raw Nerve Scheme for first time directors. My grandmother was 98 at the time, and it is loosly based on a morphine dream she had one day. On most of these films I do everything myself, but for this one I had an awesome crew and cast. It was a totally nerve-wracking experience and I will never attempt to be a director again! I'm reworking it before I put it online.
